I stopped buying Cherrios (and any other dry cereal) for my family about two years ago. I don't know why but it seemed even after two full bowls, the kids would be hungry again within one hour. But dry cereal is quick and I'm not up to cooking a hot breakfast every morning. So I offered Museli on top of yogurt and was surprised how much they liked it. What was even more surprising was how long it kept them satisfied - it sustained them until lunchtime (this is a great meal to feed the kids before church).
Now we eat Muesli regularly for breakfast. In one meal our family can consume 2 qts of yogurt and at least 12 oz. of Museli. To keep costs down I now make my yogurt the way Emily recently posted and ordered my Museli in bulk. We really like this familia brand and I was able to special order it in bulk at a wholesale price. I ordered 4 cases and I'm hoping it will last us at least for 6 months.
My Dad, who is mostly Swiss and served his mission in Switzerland, loves it also and actually mixes up his own Museli. I will experiment with that when our stash is running low. For now though I have enough work just making the 6 qts of yogurt we go through each week. We will however take his suggestion of adding fresh grapes or shredded apples and let it sit over night. I believe that is called Birchermuesli.
So give it a try. Believe me it is a lot tastier than it looks.


That was our breakfast everyday in Europe. We ate it with liquid yogurt. I am going to have to try making my own yogurt. I miss the strong plain yogurt from Japan. Do you change the hot bottle after a few hours?
ReplyDeleteI put it in a cooler with 3 mason jars full of yogurt and 3 full of hot hot water. I wrapped them in dish towels then put the lid on the cooler. Then I put the cooler on top of the Rat's cage so she couldn't escape again (but that is another story). That was 10:30 pm by 8:00 am we had yogurt. It was on the watery side but it strong the way we like it!

ReplyDeleteI will post my Dad's recipe if you can't find it. I just called the special foods manager at our local grocery store and worked the order out with him. I did contact the company in Switzerland but they said you have to use a distributor in the US - there is one in New Jersey but they were just as expensive as retail price. So call your local grocery store first. I can give you the UPC item # if you need it.
