William has really enjoyed my old Ed Emberley finger print book. I especially love the picture he created of our whole family, so much so that it is my new title image. I also like these ostriches.
When I was William's age Ed Emberley visited our school. We still have the personalized book he signed for our family. Other authors that visited with us included Judy Blume, Beverly Cleary, and Steven Kellogg. I didn't realize how cool that was until I was an adult and starting reading their books with my own kids.
Paul and Caryn just reminded me of two more, Marc Brown (Arthur) and Alfred Slote.

That is adorable! Where did you live that you were so lucky to have such great authors come and visit? That's amazing! How's the selling the house thing going?? Not too fun, I know. It's too hard to keep an immaculate house with kids running all over it!
ReplyDeleteI love the header! I'll have to see if I can find that book and let my kids have some fun with it. It looks like a lot of fun!
ReplyDeleteGreat header and post Love William's creativity! On the author front, don't forget Marc Brown (of Arthur fame!). I still have my signed book...

Al--you are amazing-I can't believe you stayed up so late and added a post in addition to the new header. It turned out really cute.
ReplyDeletegood job william. I like your pictcure. LOVE , James
ReplyDeleteI love it, William! Paul's glasses, your curly hair, Maryanna's skirt, Henry's car seat... they are all great.
ReplyDeleteAlison, that is so great that you have met Beverly Cleary. She is from Washington State, you know. I used to read her books in Japanese to my little sister. Asha and I just finished "Ramona's World" and started "Emily's Imagination". I just love her stories.
boderick family - We were really lucky to have such great schools in Bloomfield HIlls, MI where both Paul and I grew up and went to school with each other since first grade.
ReplyDeleteCaryn- thanks for the reminder on Marc Brown I forgot that one. There were a few more I can't remember and will have to ask Paul about it since he was lucky to be one of the "young authors" who got to share lunch with them.
Allison - have fun with the book but be careful with the ink pad because my little girls got to it and there was handprint and footprint "art" all over the floors and walls soon after!
Marie'-
ReplyDeleteI told all the kids they can't draw me with glasses since I'm still trying to get use to them myself.
we just started "Henry and the paper route" for our little HEnry. Last year the little boys loved "the mouse and the motorcycle"
William - I love the artwork. You made Archie look so funny!
ReplyDeleteAl - a couple you forgot about: I still have an autographed copy of "Leprechauns Never Lie" from Lorna Balian's visit and I was a huge fan of Alfred Slote (Tony and Me, My Robot Buddy, Hang Tough Paul Mather) who came for a day and had lunch with us. There are probably others. I still remember those days in the Media Center with Ms Moffit, reading us all those stories in that little nook with the couches. You looked so cute in those pigtails. Little did the both of us know....you would be blogging about those experiences.
Do you guys remember the Gemini Twins? I'm not sure if they were authors, but I think they came to Conant at least twice and put on a good show. I still hear them singing, "I'm going to tell, I'm going to tell. I'm going to holler and I'm going to yell."
ReplyDeleteI also remember Judy Bloom. I thought it was the coolest thing that (after an accident) she only wrote cursive backwards.
I was never a young author either. Never too late!
I also loved Ed Emberley. I sat for hours learning how to draw that owl and other birds and animals.
ReplyDeleteGood job William!
I think I had that book. You just brought back a good memory.
