This is a playful kid poem, something I composed for my baby who I can't believe is 1 today!
The Shrinking Machine
My kids think I'm mean
For, I've invented a shrinking machine,
I'll wait 'till they sleep and just stick 'em right in
And Zip! Zap! Beep! Whirl! give it a spin
From four feet to three, I'll stop it at two
Look at them now! my babies brand new.
With three on my lap and the rest strapped to my back
Now, where do I buy a six baby front pack?
A multi-task mama tries to get it all done
But diapers, dishes, messes soon take from the fun
The Caution! tag reads: "This spell will not last"
For babies and children, they grow up too fast
So hold them now kiss 'em, cradle them too
Play with them, listen, something else I should do
Look right in their eyes and capture their voice
Then let them grow up, there's really no choice
Tonight I'll just leave them and let 'em all sleep
Then shut down the shrinker with a beep, beep, beep, beep
But wait! an idea for the machine, something I missed
Instead I'll just load my growing to-do list
More Wordful Wednesday here

They do grow up so fast! Great poem!
ReplyDeleteAnd PS I lost your email address somehow and I wanted to email you the math books that we use for homeschool. We've been using "Mastering Essential Math Skills" by Richard W. Fisher. He has about 8 books or so from elementary through high school.
Talk about growing up fast!
Letting them grow up is so hard sometimes! But as you say, there really is no choice. Such a wonderful reminder to just enjoy them now at whatever stage they're at.
ReplyDeleteThat was very fun to read, and so true! I liked imagining having all five of my children as babies at one time and realizing that I really do want them to grow up and there is joy in growing up too.
ReplyDeleteBoy do I ever wish I could shrink my to do list.
I didn't think there was a machine I could wish for more than Mrs. Jetson's dinner-maker. But you have given me a new #1.
ReplyDeleteGosh, I'm amazed at the poetry talent out there. Wordfull Wednesday is a great way to share.
Did you really write that? wow!
ReplyDeleteWith the right illustrations, that would be an awesome book to read to the kiddos...
ReplyDeleteOne family rule that my kids are always breaking is "No growing allowed!" ~sigh~
I love it, and had many of those thoughts lately, though not nearly as fun to think as to read yours!
ReplyDeleteGreat poem :) So many days I wonder where the time has gone. Happy Birthday little Man!
ReplyDeleteFun to read. Very imaginative! I wish I could hold my babies forever, but I wouldn't miss them growing up for the world.
ReplyDeleteHmmm, shrinking machine? I wonder if I can get one off ebay. :)
ReplyDeleteHey Al-
ReplyDeleteHow come there's no spot to leave comments on your Facebook wall? I need your address.
Hey Al!! great poem!!--you are talented!!
ReplyDeletegreat thoughts Al. Enjoy them when they are young eventhough they crawl all over in church. We had littlekids once andnow they all have little kids of their own and I am chuckling down my sleeve.
ReplyDeleteLove, Dad
What a fun poem! I am so careful about telling Griffin I never want him to grow up because he went through an odd spell where he told us he was never going to be six. Now I know he was only three at the time, but it was weird. I'd ask him why not, and he'd just say, the oldest I'm going to get is five, Mommy. i don't know why. It was spooky. Ever since then, I tell him I can't wait to see him go to college and become a daddy someday too. No more talk about staying little until after he turns six! Am I strange?
ReplyDeleteCaryn
I love it. I love it! They do grow up fast and you captured a Mom's feelings perfectly.
ReplyDeleteOh..if only I could get my hands on a time stopper or kid shrinker! :)
ReplyDeleteWonderful poem. Thanks so much for sharing.
