A Birthday Party for Mom

My mom's birthday is this week and I'm a bit stuck as to what I can do for her or what I could give her.

This picture is from her birthday party last year. Originally us girls thought to take her to lunch but she said "No way! What a waste of time, money and calories....do you know for the cost of lunch we could purchase a whole case of food". She proceeded to plan and organize her own party and scheduled appointments for us to go work at the welfare square cannery.

We had so much fun dry packing potato flakes and dried apples. I can't remember how many cases we filled but my mom purchased one for each of us and offered it as our party favor. I was especially impressed and inspired by the organization and efficiency of the whole facility and kept wishing I had visited there before we remodeled our kitchen.

So what do you do for someone so selfless and practical? She already has everything she needs (if not mutiples as she is still the habit of buying in bulk). Any ideas?

  1. You may have already done something like this, but what about creating a "birth" book. Because of her "birth" and sacrifice and selflessness, etc. she has created so many other "births". You can start in birth order of all of her children and then grandchildren, etc. Each page would be dedicated to each child. Each person can write something simple about her or whatever they want, a poem, a funny story, the list goes on. I think this would be something she would cherish always and be amazed at the lives that she has started. You could easily do this online with the plethora of companies out there - Shutterfly, Heritage Makers, etc. Good luck! You're brilliant so I'm sure whatever you do will be wonderful!

  2. Do you all like to sing? You can make a music CD of cute songs about the family.

We gave Scott's mom a ring with 9 birthstones, each representing a kid. She LOVES it. Your mom would have quite the ring with 17 stones!

I love that picture of you in a plastic hat and apron.

  3. My mom likes to write cards to others. One year I made 30 different cards for all occasions and put them in a cute box.

If your mom likes to cook maybe you could make her some potholders or an apron with some of that cute material you have. That is definitely something practical.

  4. I say go to the cannary again. It could be a fun yearly tradition. I love the hair nets! It's kind of fun packing food too.
