Japanese sewing books are what got me sewing again after years of trying to work on ill fitting patterns and also being too lazy to draft my own. I love the simplicity in both the design and construction, they don't mess around with random steps. Thank you Marie' for the introduction and thank you to your family members who have found space in their suitcases for me.
You don't have to go to Japan though to get them. There are a bunch on ebay, etsy, and supperbuzzy.
As for translation anyone with basic sewing knowledge can figure it out just by looking at the drawings. It is also helpful to memorize certain words like "back", and "front". I trace the patterns with either Swedish tracing paper or medical lab paper (much cheaper).
I don't think I could pick out my favorites because I like different styles from each of them. I am working on a bunch for Spring/Summer and will post them as they are finished. Most of my sewing projects are from these books or drafted off their basic patterns.

Al-are the adult ones new? I want to look in those for Natalie. How are the vegetable coming
ReplyDeleteWow, I didn't realize you had that many.
ReplyDeleteI was wondering the same thing as Emily as I read your post. Did you find the apple? My mom said she might still have the ones we made for Yurika. I hope she does.
Next order due end of May. My parents are coming to Utah in June.
My sister said she LOVES the apron you made for her. She is working on a thank you card.
Tell me which dress I should make for Asha from the recital book, too.
Which one is good to start with for say sewing all my daughters' clothes? I know my girls would love the veggies!
ReplyDeleteEmily - the adult ones are not new. I have had them but have yet to try them because I haven't sewn for myself yet. They would fit Natalie perfectly!
ReplyDeleteMarie'- I've been meaning to call you but I think we have both been busy sewing. You should come out to UT when your parents are here!
Chocolate on my Cranium- I have some great recommendations for your family. I also will mail you some copies of the fruit and veggie patterns to try out because they are easy enough to start with. They are all hand sewing and would be perfect for young girls. Email me at happyhomemadebagels@gmail.com and I'll send you links to the other books I recommend.
Thank you for posting these ideas and suggestions and basic info.
ReplyDeleteI've been looking at the links you post with your darling projects thinking, "Japanese? Dang! How in the world am I going to read those?! She must have served a mission there!" lol.
