Birthday Crowns

Birthday crowns are a fun tradition we have adopted this year.  They are so fun and simple to make that we put a few together for our cute little cousins.

William and James stayed up one night to help assemble these.  I don't have very clear instructions because I don't think you need any, but here are a few tips anyways.

Cut out any shape crown, I did 7 point crown here but saw several other examples on etsy.  Cut out your main color first with regular scissors and when you are sure you like the shape go ahead and use the pinking shears.   Sew crown top of the background color, it can just be a long rectangle so don't worry about matching the exact shape, just be sure it is pinned flat so no bubbles appear. This is a great project for young sewers!

Now go ahead and trim the outside border edge with the pinking shears.

Now you are ready to embellish and that is the fun part.  We used magnetic numbers as a guide.

I like layering different combinations of colors and just used a small zig-zag (or bar tac) on the tiny shapes.  Here they are again laid out flat with added Velcro.

But they look even cuter on.

  1. Alison, you're so creative! I hope when I have kids I can think up a fraction of the idea you do! I will keep this one in mind because it's so adorable.

  2. Just ran across your blog by reading your guest post at Chocolate on my Cranium. I'm a homeschool mom of 3 (so far) and I adore your blog! I have got to sew some of the birthday crowns. You have great ideas and your family looks so happy and wonderful. Thanks for sharing!
