This was a really quick and fun project that anyone could do - here is the pattern. Although named "pillow" it is quite large and I would call it more of a footstool or ottoman. I made the 24" and used a fun print from IKEA. I got three boxes of 5lb. stuffing from Walmart (each about 8$) but only used a box and a half. I want to make the 18" one now, possibly tangerine colored to compliment the crayon box theme going on in our living room. Also these would be great piled up in the girls room as I can only imagine the fun they would have with them. I'm just undecided on what print to use.

That is sooo cute. I may have to attempt that! But you saying anyone could do it may not be so with my little sewing capabilities. I love the fun fabric you used
ReplyDeleteIt is cool how it holds it's shape like that. I can just imagine how fun it would be to pile a few of those up and jump off the top.
ReplyDeleteOooo a great little nursing stool! I love the size of it. Like a little 'tuffet'! And I agree- easy to you is HARD for us commoners. There is no way I would attempt it!
ReplyDeleteSeriously, anyone who can sew a straight stitch and pivot at a dot can do it. The top takes a little top stitching and then after stuffing, some hand sewing will finish it off.
ReplyDeleteThe hardest part of this project was going to Walmart - I don't typically go there because it is so out of the way, somewhat of a hassle once you're there, and a bit ghetto in downtown Salt Lake (a woman threatened to slap me after I glanced at her while screaming at her child). Well it is a step up from our old South Philly one where there were frequent shooting.
Anyways- the hardest part of the project was locating stuffing in bulk. Walmart was the place for me. Other places sold it in 12 oz. bags anywhere between 3.50-5.00$ but you need at least 10 bags.
Go ahead and try it - my 14 year old nieces may even try making them.
I think Natalie would love to do this project. I love the fabric you used
ReplyDeleteI love all your projects. I'm so glad you post pictures of everything. I would love to learn how to draft patterns, but I'm kind of scared. The only pattern I have ever drafted was a couple of months ago when I picked apart my friend's old carseat cover to make her a completely new one. Do you just "eye" clothes you like and then try to draw a pattern or do you take the piece of clothing apart and go from there?
ReplyDeleteAnd I will definitely be trying to find that fabric store in Barcelona when we go in early June.
I LOVE these! Do you think you could fill them and make bean bags out of them? I was thinking of doing something like this for the boys to lounge on in their play area...
ReplyDeleteBTW, at 38 weeks I was consuming Coldstone cake batter ice cream and sleeping. Some people eat ice cream, others are super mom. I guess I'm in the ice cream category...guess which one you're in?! :)
Amy- sewing is a lot easier with a pattern. Drafting patterns really is not that fun but I resort to it when I can't find what I'm looking for. It is easier for knits because they are more forgiving. When sewing for myself I HAVE to draft patterns because it is just as much work to make alterations to the originals. I am loving the Japanese patterns lately as they fit a lot better than your average Mcalls, simplicity. Julia looks long and lean just like you so you probably have to alter even her patterns. You could try one of the books - You may need a Japanese dictionary or find someone who can translate the details - or I could help you through the details because I have already worked through several books. But if you do want to draft go ahead and trace pieces that already fit well and then make alterations to those specific pieces. We used the Armstrong ( that's the author- check amazon) book at BYU but the focus is on adults with a small portion on children. Did you ever know Diane Hubbard in MI? She is developing a line of children's patterns that will be amazing - so hold tight they may be ready by Fall and she has done the hard work for us. Also don't forget to budget extra time and money for the lace and trim shop in downtown Barcelona (I'll have to do some researh for exact location). I think I spent an hour and a half plus 50 Euro's there. Good luck!
ReplyDeleteCaryn - your kids would love these pillow things! I made a bean bag for the boys room but I like these better because they hold their shape better. The bean bags turn into big blobs that have to be fluffed up. These are fun because you could stack them, sit on them, jump off them and just lean up against them. I guess it does depend on how full you stuff them though.
ReplyDeletePaul's mom has told me about all your mom's sewing and so she could definately help you get them done. Or now you could even get together with Mary oncd she is settled and do this project. David would love them as well.
I would just suggest using Home Dec weight fabric as the kids will be rough with them. Good Luck!
al- how much fabric do you need. do the kids sit on them or does it turn into wild play? suz
ReplyDeleteAl- why don't you make a category called "flops" - projects that aren't perfect so the rest of us can feel better about ourselves. i'm just bitter you took me off your friends and family list
ReplyDeleteThat name sounds vaguely familar. Keep me posted about her pattern line. And yes it is really annoying when I sew for Julia because if I don't alter it everything turns out very wide. (but unlike you I don't have a lot of altering "skills".)Poor Julia didn't even weigh 20lbs when she went to her 12 month doctor's visit last month.
ReplyDeleteEverytime i go downtown for fabric I drop at least $50 so I'll be sure to budget at least that much for Barcelona fabric.
I'll have to check out the japanese pattern book.
Amy- There links to the books you can purchase on ebay. I recommend the book under "Something extra for Clara" Julia would probably fit 80-90 cm
ReplyDeleteOk, Al, mystery solved for me. I thought Mary was coming to Michigan, but haven't heard it from the horse's mouth. It's so hard to keep in touch! The Wirthlin blogs have inspired me to start my own, although I've yet to get it done. Hopefully mine will be as creative as yours--with some really fun stuff in there!
