My Ant Farm

By William

I got an ant farm last Christmas. It said the ants would come in the mail. It tooks months for the ants to come. I felt surprised when we got them because I was waiting so long. The ants came with a feeding chart, an ant information poster, a magnifying glass, and an activity book. I learned little interesting facts about ants. I discovered my ants were red ants. That made me feel nervous about them climbing out. They are harvester ants and harvester ants love to dig. Harvester ants are dangerous because they can bite. I also read about army ants. Army ants are also dangerous because they could kill big animals like horses and rattle snakes. Peter was getting afraid because he never wants to see a colony of millions of army ants eating a rattle snake near our house. Last Sunday we watered the ants, they drank the water. I check on them everyday to make sure no ants are fighting each other. When I look at them they stop fighting and start digging holes. There is a button, we pressed it and the ant farm was glowing.

  1. William –

That was a brilliant, fantastic, and enchanting post about ants. I think it’s relevant to mention that ants are tantalized by pleasant croissants, eggplant, cantaloupe, or really any extant variant of plants. Once an immigrant merchant wanted to sell me some pleasant giant ants, but he would not offer a warranty despite my wants – it turns out the ants I bought from him were ignorant, mutant ants that instantly became an irritant, and a disadvantage to me. They were not pleasant or romantic – instead they were deviant tyrants that wanted to become the occupants of my home. I tried to chase them away with disinfectant and repellant. It turns out they had developed antibodies to the pollutant, and instead, I (the occupant) had to leave for a distant place, leaving the apartment vacant. Now the mutant, deviant, tyrant ants live in the apartmant.

  2. I maybe a bit tired but I just didn't understand daddy's comment.

I too was excited and surpised about the arrival of your ants. I almost forgot about the ant farm stashed way up high in the corner cabinet.

I know how it feels to await the arrival of something exciting......

  3. One more note.

I noticed you and James brought the ants outside to enjoy the sunshine the other day. You also brought out the magnifying glass so the neighbors could get a closer look at the ants. It is not a good idea to hold a magnifying glass over ants in sunlight as they may not survive the intensified heat. Karen can tell you a great story about that.

  4. Down here in Texas we call those Fire Ants, and there are TONS of them here. Their sting feels like you are on fire and we kill them off as soon as we see them. I am glad yours are in a cage where they can't get to you.

  5. What a cool thing you've got, William! Now you can safely watch the activities of your ants up close.
Here in San Diego, there are ants everywhere. A few months after we moved in the house, we started seeing them here and there in different rooms. I would spray them and clean them up. Then one day I came home from running errands, and there were armies of ants coming out of every outlet. They all formed a straight line into the kitchen sink, and were busy eating the cereal my children didn't finish that morning. My children thought it was an amazing sight, but I was grossed out and thought I was going to throw up. The army kept coming everyday until we had the whole house sprayed by a professional.

  8. William,

I remember when we lived in Boston we had red ants in the backyard. It stung really bad if they bit you. I once was standing near one of their hills and had about 20 ants crawling up my leg. I am scared of the red ants too and glad they are in that cool container. I liked your post.
