Last week I was done with the redbox this week I hit my fill of red meat.
So here is a lovely assortment of grains that I am excited to experiment with. Can you match them to their number? The picture is small and I only expect Emily to get them all but here they are:
- Quinao
- Kamut
- Spelt
- Barley
- Amaranth
- Millet
- Red Quinoa
We've been eating millet and quinoa for about a year now but just yesterday I joined in on Emily's "Dollars and Sense" enrichment meeting where we learned about other grains and how to prepare them. The dishes that were demonstrated were tasty and filling in addition to being an inexpensive and healthy way to feed a family. I prefer to use my pressure cooker to prepare them but you can easily do it on the stove top. Emily posted the flyer from the meeting and you can find out more ways to prepare the grains from Chef Brad (Suz - I hope I can find one of his books at the library or I just may have to add it to may permanent book collection).

Wow, I've never even heard of half of those. I obviously need to do some research.
ReplyDeleteAl you always have clever titles to your blog. How did your dinner turn out?
ReplyDeleteI finally broke out my millet last night. I made pilaf with it. Mike and I really liked it, but some of the kids weren't really all that excited about it. Mike loved the idea of beans and rice for dinner. Our kids are so spoiled when it comes to food. Let me know if you have any recipes you love.
ReplyDeleteI tried. (remember me, Alexis' friend) I actually use most of these so I guessed. It's hard to tell the shape of the grain from so far away. 7 is Red Quinoa. I'm thinking Millet is 1 or 6 and same with Amaranth. Quinoa is maybe 4 5 or 6. Am I anywhere in the ballpark? I just tried to see which ones were rounded and the colorings. :) Gave me something to do while the kids worked on poetry.
ReplyDeleteGreat job Cortney! I couldn't even pronounce these grains when I first started out.
ReplyDeleteWhat do you do with your grains anyways - I'm always looking for new ideas.
Al - stop with all the grains. you need to put on some weight. I suggest cafe rio, crown burger and maybe little ceasars. Or how about fake healthy, like pei wei? pana express? I can't see what the grains are fromy your picture.
