William's resolution

William's resolution to have better birthdays really caught me off guard; it also made me feel kind of guilty.  So the next day I dragged James to the fabric store (the boys have developed very low tolerance for that place).  He was helpful in picking out all the colors for our banner and stayed up to 10:30 cutting out the letters and ironing them on with wonder-under.  We had it ready just in time for Peter's birthday and will pull it out for each of our birthdays throughout the year.

We also have a castle/knight party planned for the end of this week.  I am busy sewing little favor bags, we have a dragon pinata filled with Legos, a treasure box filled with gold and silver (hershey kisses & rolo's), crowns to decorate, foam swords, and games planned such as "capture the king", and "keep the balloon out of the moat".

Any other ideas?  There will be 15 boys between the ages of 3 and 9 so it promises to be chaotic. Any other birthday traditions our family could adopt?

  1. Love the Happy Birthday banner! I've been wanting to make one to use around here.

One tradition we have is for every birthday we buy a cheap plastic tablecloth from the dollar store in the birthday person's favorite color. I lay it out and write "Happy Birthday to _____!" Then everyone writes some little note to the them (use permanent marker). Starting at the bottom I cut strips that go almost all the way up to the top. The night before the birthday I hang the tablecloth in the birthday person's bedroom doorway. They love having this "curtain" to walk through all day long.

  2. I love the banner you made! It is so cute! My children have asked me why we don't have banners and balloons all over the house for everyone's b-days. I tell them it is because I am too busy doing everything else they want done! :) Birthdays at our house mean that the birthday child gets to pick the meals for the day. We have had everything from chicken cordon bleu to shells and cheese to PB&J. They also get to open one present in the morning before the day gets going. I also decorate the cake (we do everything from ice cream cakes to cupcake cakes to regular cakes) decorated ANY way they want. We have had pokemon, dogs, ducks, bunnies, and our family drawn on cakes or the cake in the shape of these objects. It gets pretty fun to figure out how I am going to make these creations. It sounds to me like you have a fabulous party planned and everyone will love it!

  3. Okay, I would like to place my order. I'm seirous...I want one exactly like that. Since I cannot buy bagels from you to support your fundraising efforts, can I buy a banner? I would love to use this every holiday. Oh- and my tip for you that I live by is that we have alternate years having a big party. We have a 'friend' party one year and then the next year it is a 'family' party where we do something as a family like a baseball game or outing. It helps me not stress every year about big parties. Good luck!

  5. Great banner, Al. Did you still save the extra fabric for me to make one? I hope Peter had a great day. My boys are excited for the party.

We love birthdays around here. One thing we started doing on birthdays is breakfast-in-bed. This started after last mothers' day when the kids were really jealous of me eating in bed, so they were begging for breakfast-in-bed. I said, maybe on your birthday. I always decorate the house a little and make a cake with the theme of their choice.

    Happy Birthday Peter!

  6. Great banner Al! I bought a cheap birthday banner from Party Land over ten years ago, and it is still tradition that it be put up for every birthday. I've taped it back together several times, and the strings it hangs from are nearly shot. But still they insist that it comes out. Maybe I should make a cool one like yours - but that might be breaking tradition.

  7. Sounds fun to be. The banner is fantastic. I wish I could sew like you. I'm limited to straight lines pretty much.

  8. I wrote a lengthly comment on this post yesterday, but I don't know what happened.

Anyway, Scott wrote up a treasure hunt for Asha's birthday that was a great entertainment. The clues focused on kids getting to know the birthday girl and the family. They walked all over the house looking for Scott's surf board in the garage, Asha's chin up bar on her door frame, or even our walk-in closet. There were only three locations where they got some treasure, but the kids didn't care. They had a great time getting to know our house and our family.

    The banner looks great.

  12. I love the banner. Emily's birthday is coming up and I think I already have everything but the ric rac in my stash....For birthdays the kids get to pick everything for the day (they call it being king or queen for the day). From food to activities to music we listen to in the car. We also love pinatas at the party and we've done a few treasure hunts (but never a get-to-know-you treasure hunt, I like that idea!). I hope he had a wonderful day and good luck with your parties this year.

  13. We have the same tradition only with a cheap paper one from a party store. I love how you can just whip out projects like this. Do you think I have time to complete one before Mark's B-day?
