I've had enough of the redbox and am now officially convinced few great movies have been produced in the last several years. It's time to renew my Netfilx account so I can once again enjoy great movies, old classics and international films.I found Annie at my Mom's house and it's been a couple of decades since I last saw it. There was a summer in my childhood where us girls watched it at least everyday - we loved it! I think what made it so entertaining for us is we really related to those little girl orphans, not that we were uncared for in the least, we were just scrappy little girls sharing one great big room (there were at least 6 of us in there at a time) and living our own musical the way we use to sing, dance and play together. In fact, we even coreographed our own version of "It's a Hard Knock Life" complete with gymnastics, flips off the bunk bed, pillow fights, jumping from bed to bed and climbing the hallway walls. Suz often played Annie, Becca was always Molly, and Mary and I switched between Pepper, Miss Hanagen, and Grace. Watching this movie again brought back many pleasant memories of my childhood.
Yesterday I showed it to Maryanna for the first time. She must have liked it because she sat through the whole thing and I heard her belting out the words "tomorrow" while sitting on the potty.
Except for a movie night once a week and occasional sports events our family doesn't watch T.V. This next month may have to be the exception though as I get back my strength. I am in need of movie recommendations beyond recent Disney or Pixar productions to enjoy with the kids, or maybe we'll have to pick up where we left off on Planet Earth from our last road trip.

We love Annie around our house. A few more couple old musicals we love (though they are Disney) are Chitty Chitty Bang Bang, Bedknobs and Broomsticks, Mary Poppins (of course) and we just picked up Pippi Longstocking and the girls can't get enough of it.
ReplyDeleteSome of our family favorites are Sound of Music, Old Yeller, Swiss Family Robinson, Where the Red Fern Grows, and Robin Hood (the Disney cartoon). That's all I can think of off the top of my head...Happy movie watching!
ReplyDeleteWe love watching old Bob Hope movies like "Fullerbrush Man," "Son of Pale Face," and "Neptune's Daughter." Danny Kay movies are also very funny. "The Secret Life of Walter Mitty" and "Court Jester" are hilarious.
ReplyDeleteOops, my daughter just informed me that Fullerbrush Man and Neptune's Daughter have Red Skelton not Bob Hope. :D
ReplyDeleteI've got to see that sometime.
ReplyDeleteAnnie was one of my most favorite movies as a kid and now is one of my girls' favorites! If I were you I would look to get movies from the library (free-yay!) and right now I am watching a 5 part show called Cranford that was made by the BBC. SOOOOOO good!! I am loving it! Of course, I love all of the regency era movies BBC makes and they are so clean! Libraries, for whatever reason, quite often carry a lot of BBC movies.
ReplyDeleteHas your family seen "Facing the Giants"? We really enjoyed (even though it may be a bit hokey by normal standards!) In the back of the Duggar book are of list of clean, inspiring movies, and that's where we learned of that one. We have all the others on our Netflix que,--the only way to go for great selection, like you said! We love the old black and white classics. Oh, your children would enjoy "Bringing up Baby" with Cary Grant and Katherine Hepburn. My children have watched it repeatedly!
ReplyDeleteHey, I just visited the houseoforder blog and love it! I've been reading Emilie Barnes book "More Hours in My Day" recently and am working hard at getting more organized. Now I'm excited to learn about these resources! I need all the help I can get! Is Marie Ricks the person who helped you after moving into your new home?
Did I ever tell you that my mom loved Annie so much that she permed my hair super curly? I was in third grade in Japan, and nobody understood why my mom would do such a crazy thing to her daughter. After a year of begging, I got it permed back straight.
ReplyDeleteTime for another Japanese book order. My sister is coming to Utah for an audition. She agreed to bring some books. Do you have anything you want?
You don't know me (I'm one of Alexis' friends) but I was about to suggest Planet Earth or Blue Planet (until you mentioned it!) My kids also love the Little House on the Prarie Seasons (with Michael Landon).
ReplyDeleteYou forgot, Cheryl played Miss Hanagen most of the time.
ReplyDeleteI don't have netflix. I just go to btpl!
Al---I remember complaining to mom that all you little girls did was watch Annie or Little house on the Prarie. The other movie I remember you little girls watching was Pollyanna.
ReplyDeleteMaybe it is time to go back to Netflix - I feel like we both lost precious brain cells last week watching some of those Redbox atrocities. I wonder if the writers, producers, directors, and actors of such will be on the hook for some serious community service in the afterlife to compensate humanity for subjecting so many to such a colossal waste of our precious time in mortality.
ReplyDeleteOf course, who needs Hollywood when we have a near-constant 8am-9pm flow of accidents, wipeouts, jokes, general spontaneous kid mayhem, and 'Junior Mints'. Maybe we just get some popcorn, sit back, let the kids do their thing, and enjoy.
Plus that would be a really inexpensive date night.
A must for us is Bedknobs and Broomsticks. All the kids love it and Scott and I grew up on that movie. It's a classic like Mary Poppins
ReplyDeleteWe watched the most crazy, strange, amazing movie the other night called The Worlds Fastest Indian. You and Paul should rent it... it will make you laugh and it's a true story. Also love Anne of Green Gables, My Fair Lady, Pollyanna, Chitty Chitty, and my kids love an old Flipper movie lately!
ReplyDeleteLet's see...what hasn't been mentioned?
ReplyDeleteWe love "Summer Magic" and "The Happiest Millionaire" and "Slipper and the Rose".
And completely off topic, (but I don't know your email:)...
the other day you asked me about O.T. reading suggestions on my alibraryoflearning blog.
I asked my daughter and she said:
1. Set the same time for reading every day. Use a timer buzzer if that helps but be consistent.
2. Use the institute manual for questions that seem really hard.
3. Use a chart to check off your progress.
4. Just keep going. It really does come to an end!
I don't know it that's helpful or not. :/
I love the movie "Annie"! We have been watching it in the car with the kids lately. Do you remember when we used to hang from the banister and act out the part of Annie about to fall off the ladder. We would hang there and say, "Punjab....HELP!!"
ReplyDeleteAnother good movie for you (your kids might not be able to handle it) is the 5 hour A&E Pride and Predjudice. Remember we spent a pointless day 3 years ago watching that with our babies and knitting?
